Te mapa
Kamp-Lintfort lies on the flat Lower Rhine plain, west of Duisburg and close to Moers. Two quite different histories are visible on its map. In the north is Kamp Abbey, founded in 1123 as the first Cistercian monastery in German-speaking lands, set on a small hill with a terraced baroque garden stepping down its slope.
The rest of the town grew around coal. The Friedrich Heinrich colliery opened in the early twentieth century, and the company built orderly miners' housing colonies with curving streets and gardens. Mining ended in 2012, and the former colliery grounds were turned into a park for the state garden show in 2020.
A Kamp-Lintfort map poster captures that layering: the abbey grounds, the garden-city streets of the old colonies, and the open area where the pithead once stood. The surrounding plain is flat and agricultural, which frames the town's patchwork of neighbourhoods clearly in a single-colour print.
The abbey stands on a low hill with a baroque terraced garden descending in formal steps, one of the few pieces of relief on the otherwise flat Lower Rhine plain.
The old workers' settlement is laid out with gently curving lanes and small plots, a garden-city pattern that looks distinctly softer than a standard grid.
The land of the Friedrich Heinrich mine now forms a park and new district, an open space near the centre that marks the end of the coal era.
