Te mapa
Kanaya lies on the west bank of the Ōi River in Shizuoka Prefecture, and since 2005 it has been part of the city of Shimada. On a map the town stretches along the valley floor between the wide, braided riverbed and the rising ground of the Makinohara plateau, so its streets run mostly parallel to the water, pressed into a narrow band.
In the Edo period Kanaya was a post station on the Tōkaidō, the road between Edo and Kyoto. The Ōi had no bridge then, and travellers were carried across by porters, sometimes waiting days when the water ran high. Today Kanaya Station is the starting point of the Ōigawa Railway, known for running preserved steam locomotives up the valley.
Above the town, the Makinohara plateau is one of Japan's largest tea-growing areas, and its fields read on a map as fine, regular strips. A Kanaya map poster holds the contrast between these orderly slopes, the loose river channels and the compact old town: three very different kinds of line gathered in a single frame.
The river spreads across a broad gravel bed with shifting channels, a pale open band along the eastern side of the map that separates Kanaya from Shimada's older core.
The route of the old highway still threads through town and climbs west toward the plateau, along a line that travellers have followed for centuries.
West of the town the terrain rises to the Makinohara tea fields, where farm roads and field boundaries form a precise, repeating pattern.

Koteā ko Kanaya
Kanaya suits anyone who has walked the Tōkaidō, ridden the steam train up the Ōi valley or brewed tea grown on its hillsides. The map balances a wild river with cultivated order, which makes it work equally well in a study, a kitchen or a quiet hallway.
Every poster can carry your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, and comes in five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Try the free watermarked preview first, then buy the $9 HD files in six sizes or order a printed poster.
