Kantharalak is a town in Si Sa Ket province in northeastern Thailand, in the flat, agricultural country of the lower Isan region. From above, the town appears as a compact cluster of streets organised along main roads, with the built-up area quickly giving way to rice paddies, small ponds and scattered villages. The pattern is typical of Isan towns, where roads and fields shape the map more than rivers or hills.
The district lies toward the Cambodian border and the Dangrek escarpment, and the town is known as a stop on the route toward the frontier area near the Khmer temple of Preah Vihear. That southern direction gives Kantharalak a sense of being on the way somewhere, visible on the map as roads heading out toward the hills.
