Mekong waterfront
The wide river runs the length of the town's western edge. It forms the border with Thailand, and seasonal sandbanks give it an irregular outline.

Te mapa
Savannakhet runs along the east bank of the Mekong, directly across from Mukdahan in Thailand. From above, the old centre is a small grid of streets set back from the river, with a colonial church square among the blocks. Wider roads lead inland to newer districts, and the river runs past on the western side, broad and scattered with sandbanks in the dry season.
The town's official name is Kaysone Phomvihane, after the former Lao leader who was born here, but most people still use the old name. North of the centre, the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, opened in 2006, carries a major east–west trade route across the Mekong. It is the most striking straight line on the map.
A Savannakhet map poster shows a quiet riverside town on the edge of a major regional crossroads. The old French-era streets are small and orderly. The bridge and the highway leading to Vietnam are large and direct. The Mekong, which makes up the western border, gives the print a strong, calm edge that suits minimal interiors.
The wide river runs the length of the town's western edge. It forms the border with Thailand, and seasonal sandbanks give it an irregular outline.
North of the town, a long bridge crosses the Mekong to Mukdahan. It links Laos and Thailand and is part of a trade corridor to Vietnam.
The old town is a small, regular grid of streets from the French period, with a church square. It is the most detailed part of the map.
