Te mapa
Vientiane spreads along the northern bank of the Mekong, following a broad curve of the river that also marks the border with Thailand. From above it looks unhurried for a capital: low-density neighbourhoods, generous gaps of green and water, and a compact centre close to the riverfront where the older streets run parallel to the bank.
From the centre, Lane Xang Avenue leads north-east to Patuxai, a monumental gate built in the late 1950s and 1960s, and continues toward Pha That Luang, the gilded stupa regarded as a national symbol of Laos. Downstream, the first Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, opened in 1994, carries road traffic across the Mekong.
A Vientiane map poster shows the city at its most characteristic, with the river taking up a large share of the frame. Streets fan out from the riverbank, wetlands and ponds break the pattern toward the edges, and the main avenues give the composition a clear direction and a gentle sense of order.
The river curves along the southern edge of the city, a vast, smooth shape that dominates the print and separates Laos from Thailand.
This wide, straight boulevard runs from the riverside centre to the Patuxai monument, forming one of the clearest lines on the map.
North-east of the centre, the open grounds around the great stupa form a distinct space among the surrounding streets and residential lanes.
