Te mapa
Kaqun lies in the Kashgar area of Xinjiang, in far western China, on the irrigated plain along the western edge of the Tarim Basin. Life here depends on water from the surrounding mountains. From above, settlements like this appear as strips of cultivated land and tree-lined roads set against the much larger emptiness of the desert.
The street pattern is shaped by irrigation. Roads and lanes often run alongside canals and field boundaries, producing long straight lines and narrow plots, while houses cluster along them. The built area is modest and gives way to farmland quickly.
A Kaqun map poster turns this oasis structure into clear lines on a pale field. The parallel roads, the rectangular divisions of farmland and the compact groups of houses show how a community has organised itself around scarce water. It is a quiet, precise map of a place defined by its surroundings.
Roads and field boundaries follow the canals that bring mountain water to the plain. They produce long parallel lines across the map.
Houses gather along roads in compact groups, leaving the land between them for cultivation rather than continuous building.
Beyond the irrigated land the map empties out. This reflects the transition to the arid basin that surrounds the oasis.

Oasis towns are hard to picture from a single photograph, and a map shows their logic better, with water, roads and fields working together. This print suits anyone with family roots in the Kashgar region.
