Kariega Map Poster & Print
Kariega, known until 2021 as Uitenhage, lies about thirty kilometres inland from Gqeberha and forms the inland arm of Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality. Its older centre sits beside the Swartkops River, with a compact grid of streets from the colonial era, while townships and suburbs extend across the surrounding slopes and the flatter ground beyond.
The town was founded in 1804 and grew into one of South Africa's main manufacturing centres. The large Volkswagen plant, in operation since the early 1950s, is the best-known part of that story. On the map, its factory halls and the rail lines that serve them form broad, flat shapes that contrast with the fine residential grid.
