Bhisho is the capital of South Africa's Eastern Cape province and part of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. It was built as the seat of the former Ciskei homeland and later became the provincial capital. The town sits right next to the older settlement of Qonce, once King William's Town, and on a map the two read as one urban area with distinct parts.
The government precinct stands out from above. It is made of large buildings, broad lots and generous spacing, all of it planned for administration. Around it, residential areas follow curving suburban streets, and the land beyond opens into rolling hills that lead toward the Amathole range. The Buffalo River valley runs nearby and links this inland area to the coast at East London.
A Bhisho map poster shows a town whose layout was shaped by its official role. Wide institutional blocks sit beside neighbourhood streets, and farmland and hills take over past the edge of the built-up area. In 1992 the town was the site of the Bisho massacre, an event remembered as part of South Africa's path to democracy.
The provincial legislature and department buildings sit on large, regular plots that look noticeably more spacious than the surrounding streets.
Bhisho joins directly onto Qonce, so the map shows an older grid-based town and a newer administrative district side by side.
Past the suburbs the ground rises into green, rolling country toward the Amathole mountains, and the road network thins out to a few lines.

Koteā ko Bhisho
For anyone who worked in the provincial government, studied or grew up in the area, a Bhisho poster captures a place that is often overlooked but shaped a lot of lives. It is also a good pairing with a map of East London.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a family name or a meaningful date. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
