Suburban loops

Te mapa
From above, Karratha reads as a young town. It was laid out in the late 1960s to house workers for the Pilbara iron ore industry, and the plan shows it: curving suburban loops, cul-de-sacs and broad arterial roads rather than an old grid. Rocky ridges run between the neighbourhoods and break the street pattern into separate pockets, so the town looks less like one block of streets than a cluster of settlements.
North of the town the land flattens into tidal flats and mangrove edges along Nickol Bay, and the coastline fades out in fine, irregular lines. Roads run west towards Dampier and the Burrup Peninsula, where the Murujuga rock art, one of the largest collections of petroglyphs in the world, sits among piles of weathered boulders. On paper these long connecting roads give the map a sense of distance.
A Karratha map poster keeps the contrast between the neat suburban curves and the open country around them. The town centre shows as a compact knot of streets, the airport runway draws a straight line to one side, and the surrounding land stays mostly blank. That empty space matters. It shows how a planned town was placed in a very large landscape, and it makes the print read as a clear, graphic composition.
The residential areas follow curving crescents and closed loops typical of late twentieth century planning, and they give the map a soft, rounded texture that looks very different from a street grid.
Low rocky hills separate the neighbourhoods, leaving gaps with no streets. On the poster these gaps divide the town into distinct clusters joined by a few main roads.
To the north the land dissolves into mudflats, creeks and mangroves along Nickol Bay. The shoreline is drawn as a fine, broken edge instead of a single clean line.

Koteā ko Karratha
People who have worked or lived in Karratha often remember it as a place of long shifts, red earth and a close community far from the cities. A map of its streets is a quiet way to keep that time on a wall, whether you still live there or moved on years ago.
You can add a title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example a house street or the year you arrived, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download the HD files for $9 or order a matte print, with an optional wooden frame.
