Te mapa
Kartaly lies in the south of Chelyabinsk region, near the Kazakh border, on the open steppe east of the Ural mountains. The town grew as a railway junction, and the map makes that plain: wide bands of track and sidings run through the middle, with residential areas arranged on both sides and roads crossing the rail corridor at a few points.
Around the tracks, the town is a mix of low houses on regular plots and larger apartment blocks from the Soviet period. Beyond them, the steppe spreads out flat and treeless, broken by a small river, a few lakes and rail lines heading out toward Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk and Kazakhstan.
A Kartaly map poster centres on the railway. The heavy, parallel lines of the yards cut across the composition, the neighbourhoods fill the space around them, and the open land beyond gives everything a sense of distance and scale.
Broad bands of parallel tracks run through the middle of town. On the poster they form the strongest lines and divide Kartaly into distinct halves.
Several rail lines leave the junction in different directions across the steppe. They reach the edges of the map and show Kartaly's role as a crossroads.
Much of the town is made up of detached houses on long, regular plots. From above they form a fine, even grid between the main streets.
