Te mapa
Katav-Ivanovsk is in the western part of Chelyabinsk Oblast, among the forested ridges of the Southern Urals. It started in the mid-eighteenth century as an ironworks on the Katav river. Like many Ural factory towns, it grew around a dam and the pond behind it, which powered the works. On a map, that pond is still the clearest shape in town: a broad body of water with streets gathered around its shore.
Beyond the pond, the town stretches along the valley floor, because the hills on either side leave little room to spread. The streets are fairly regular in the older quarters and follow the terrain further out, and a railway branch threads through the valley. The ironworks tradition carried into later centuries, and the factory district by the dam is still a large feature of the plan.
A Katav-Ivanovsk map poster shows how industry and landscape shaped the town together: the dam, the pond, the long valley and the forest pushing in from both sides. It suits someone with family roots in the Southern Urals, or anyone drawn to the old factory towns whose layout still follows eighteenth-century water engineering.
The pond behind the old ironworks dam is the largest open shape on the map. Streets and embankments curve along its edge, as they do in many historic Ural towns.
Ridges on both sides keep the town long and narrow. Its streets run along the valley floor, which gives the whole plan a strong directional feel.
The industrial grounds next to the dam show where the town began. They appear as large blocks set apart from the finer residential streets around them.
