Te mapa
Kavála faces south over the northern Aegean, with the island of Thasos across the water. The city climbs steep slopes above a curved harbour. Its streets follow the contours in long terraces, forming an amphitheatre above the sea. East of the port, the rocky Panagia peninsula holds the old town, a tight maze of lanes behind walls and topped by a Byzantine fortress.
Two strong lines cross this layout. One is the Kamares, the multi-arched Ottoman aqueduct that spans the valley between the old town and the newer city. The other is the waterfront itself, with its quays and breakwaters. In antiquity the town was Neapolis, the port where the Apostle Paul is said to have first landed in Europe. Muhammad Ali of Egypt was born in the old quarter.
A Kavála map poster shows all of this at once: the harbour bowl, contour-following streets stacked up the hill, the knot of the peninsula and the straight run of the aqueduct. The coastline gives the composition a firm lower edge. It is one of the more dramatic small cities in Greece to print.
The old town fills a rocky headland east of the port. Its lanes wind up to the fortress, making a dense cluster that stands apart from the regular city behind it.
A long Ottoman aqueduct crosses the city on tall arches. It links the peninsula to the hills and cuts a clean line through the street pattern.
Streets rise from the waterfront in curved terraces that follow the slope. This gives the city the shape of a stepped bowl facing the Aegean and Thasos.

Koteā ko Kavála
Kavála is a place people return to: for summers, for family, or for the ferry to Thasos. A map that shows the harbour, the headland and the aqueduct together captures the city in a way a single photograph rarely does.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line. You might write the name in Greek, or note the year you met. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the maritime setting especially well.
