Te mapa
Kerugoya is the headquarters of Kirinyaga County, on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya. From above, the town is a small, dense centre with roads winding outward across hilly ground, following ridges and valleys cut by streams flowing down from the mountain. Beyond the centre, the street network breaks up into lanes serving farms.
The land around Kerugoya is green and intensively farmed, with tea grown on the higher slopes and coffee lower down, while the Mwea irrigation scheme to the south is one of Kenya's main rice-growing areas. The town works as the administrative and market centre for this agricultural county, closely tied to its farms.
A Kerugoya map poster reflects that position on the mountainside. Roads curve with the terrain rather than running straight, streams draw fine lines down the slopes, and the centre sits as a modest cluster among them. It is a map shaped by gradient and farming rather than by grid.
Roads leaving the town follow ridges and slopes, bending with the terrain and giving the map a soft, flowing network rather than straight lines.
Streams descending from Mount Kenya cross the area in narrow valleys, drawing thin parallel lines that show the direction of the slope.
The county town is concentrated in a small central area where government offices, market and main roads meet before thinning into farmland.

Koteā ko Kerugoya
Kerugoya speaks to people from Kirinyaga, whether they still live there or moved to Nairobi or abroad. The curving roads and streams give the print an organic feel that suits the mountain country it depicts.
