Khorramabad lies in a narrow valley in the Zagros Mountains of western Iran. On the map, the city stretches along the Khorramabad River, with the built-up area filling the valley floor and ending where the slopes become steep. Roads leave the city through gaps in the mountains, connecting it with the rest of Lorestan and beyond.
At the centre stands Falak-ol-Aflak, a large fortress on an isolated rocky hill. It is the city's best-known landmark and appears on the map as a small raised island surrounded by streets.
