Khunti lies on the Chota Nagpur plateau south of Ranchi. From above it looks like a modest town gathered along its main roads, with fields and patches of woodland close on every side. The streets grew informally rather than to a plan. Lanes branch off the highways and fade into village tracks, and small streams and ponds mark the rolling ground between settlements.
The town is the headquarters of Khunti district, which was created in 2007. The surrounding area is the heartland of the Munda people. It is closely linked with Birsa Munda, the tribal leader who led resistance to colonial rule at the end of the nineteenth century. His birthplace lies within the district, which gives the town a significance far beyond its size.
A Khunti map poster shows the plateau town plainly: a denser centre, roads leaving toward Ranchi and the south, and wide open ground in between. The emptiness is part of the picture. In black and white, the loose web of lanes and the pale countryside around them look quiet, almost like a diagram.

Plateau ground
The gently rolling land of the Chota Nagpur plateau surrounds the town. Seasonal streams cross it, and ponds show as small pale shapes on the map.
