Te mapa
Kiryandongo is a refugee settlement in western Uganda, close to the highway between Kampala and Gulu. It has hosted people displaced by conflict in the region, most of them from South Sudan. On a map the settlement looks different from an ordinary town. It is organised as a series of blocks and clusters spread over a wide area, with open land between them.
Under Uganda's settlement approach, families are allocated plots for housing and cultivation, so the map shows a mix of homesteads and fields rather than dense urban streets. Dirt roads divide the area into sections, and schools, health centres and markets serve as local points of reference within each part of the settlement.
A Kiryandongo Refugee Camp map poster records a place that many people have called home, for months or for years. The geometry is straightforward, with roads, plots and clusters of homes, but for those who lived or worked here, each section carries its own memories.
The settlement is divided into numbered areas and clusters. On the map they read as separate groupings of homes connected by a shared network of roads.
Families are allocated land for housing and farming. As a result, cultivated plots appear throughout the settlement and give it a spread-out, rural pattern.
Unpaved roads connect the different sections and lead toward the main highway. They form the basic structure that organises the entire settlement on the map.
