Te mapa
Kōka covers a large, hilly area in the south of Shiga Prefecture. The map is shaped by valleys and forested ridges, not by a single city centre. Towns and villages follow the river valleys, and roads thread between them. Between these corridors, broad stretches of woodland stay mostly empty of streets.
Two traditions make Kōka widely known. It is the home of the Kōka ninja, a school tied to this region's independent local clans. It also includes Shigaraki, one of Japan's old pottery centres, famous for its rough-textured ceramics and tanuki figures. The historic Tōkaidō road once passed through Minakuchi and Tsuchiyama, both post towns within today's city.
A Kōka map poster shows a distributed city rather than a compact one, with clusters of streets linked by valley roads through the hills. That quality gives the print an organic, branching character. It feels close to a landscape drawing, and it gives the rural side of Shiga the same careful attention usually given to its lakeside cities.
The line of the historic Tōkaidō runs through former post towns such as Minakuchi. Their older street patterns still follow the route of the old road.
The pottery town of Shigaraki sits in its own valley basin. Its streets form a separate, tight cluster surrounded by wooded hills.
Large empty areas mark the hills between settlements. In monochrome they give the print breathing room and emphasise how the valleys connect the city.

Koteā ko Kōka
Kōka appeals to people with family ties to Shiga, collectors of Shigaraki ceramics and anyone drawn to the ninja history of the region. The title, subtitle and coordinates can be changed, for example to name a specific town or visit date.
It is available in five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper and Sand suit the pottery connection. Classic keeps the valley roads clear against the empty hills.
