Te mapa
Komotiní lies in Greek Thrace, where the southern slopes of the Rhodope mountains meet a broad agricultural plain that extends toward the coast and Lake Vistonida. From above, the city forms a compact, rounded plan, with the hills rising to the north and fields spreading south.
The centre keeps traces of a Byzantine fortress, and its streets are older and more irregular than the newer districts around them. Komotiní has long been home to both Christian and Muslim communities, and its skyline includes church towers and the minarets of several mosques, an unusual combination for a Greek city.
The city is also the seat of the Democritus University of Thrace, whose campus sits at the edge of town. A Komotiní map poster shows the meeting of old centre, modern expansion and the ring of roads that link it to Xanthi, Alexandroupoli and the mountain villages.
Remnants of the fortress walls survive in the city centre, where the older, more irregular streets mark the original core of Komotiní.
The mountains rise directly north of the city, and roads climb into the hills toward villages, while the city spreads southward across the plain.
The Democritus University of Thrace campus forms a planned district at the edge of the city, with broad blocks and open space.
