Koynanagar Map Poster & Print
Koynanagar sits in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, in Satara district, beside the dam that holds back the Koyna River. The town grew up around the Koyna Hydroelectric Project, one of the largest hydroelectric schemes in India. Its layout still reflects that origin, with staff colonies, service roads and public buildings on the slopes below the dam.
From above, the biggest shape is the reservoir, Shivasagar Lake, which stretches for many kilometres along the valley behind the dam. Its edges follow every fold of the hills, so the waterline becomes a long, branching form. Roads climb and switch back through dense forest, drawing thin curving lines across otherwise empty ground.
The area is also known for earthquakes: a strong one struck near the dam in 1967. Today much of the surrounding land is part of the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary. The dam forms a short, firm line across the valley. The town's roads and buildings are grouped on the ground below it, following the slope of the hills.
