Kujang-ŭp Map Poster & Print

Kujang-ŭp is the administrative centre of Kujang County in North P'yŏngan Province, North Korea. It sits in the valley of the Chongchon River, and on a map the river and its floodplain set the direction of everything else. The town stretches along the valley rather than spreading outward.

Hills rise on both sides, so roads and the railway follow the valley floor and cross the river where it narrows. Fields fill the flatter ground by the water, and the slopes above are largely unsettled, which leaves wide empty areas on the map.

A Kujang-ŭp map poster shows a valley town in its setting. The river runs through the sheet as a strong line, and the long, narrow shape of the settlement beside it has a clear, calm geometry.

01

Chongchon River

The river winds through the valley and shapes the entire town. Its channel and sandbars form the main line of the composition in black and white.

02

Valley-floor corridor

Roads, railway and buildings share the narrow flat land along the river. Together they form a linear band that runs across the map.

03

Hillside margins

The slopes on either side are mostly open land. On the map they give generous empty space around the valley, framing the town.
