Te mapa
Kungur lies in Perm Krai, on the western side of the Urals, where the Iren and Shakva rivers flow into the Sylva. The rivers split the town into distinct parts, and the map shows the historic centre on the land between them, with later districts spreading out along the banks and up onto higher ground.
Founded in the seventeenth century, Kungur became a wealthy merchant town on the trade route toward Siberia, and it was known for the tea trade and leather goods. Its old centre keeps a regular grid of streets with churches and merchant houses, and the rivers wrap around it in wide loops. Bridges connect the districts, and the railway crosses the valley on its way east.
Just outside the town is the Kungur Ice Cave, one of the largest karst caves in the Urals, known for ice formations that stay all year. A Kungur map poster focuses on the town above ground: three rivers meeting, an old grid between them, and the bridges that hold the districts together.
The Sylva, Iren and Shakva meet in the town. Their curves and confluences are the defining shapes of the poster.
The historic core keeps a regular grid of streets on the land between the rivers, the densest and most ordered part of the map.
Road and rail bridges join the districts on different banks. On paper they are the links that turn separate pieces into one town.

Kungur means something to people from Perm Krai and to those who have visited the Ice Cave. Its three rivers make it one of the more striking small-town maps in the Urals.
