Te mapa
Kyaukpadaung is in Mandalay Region, in the dry central plains of Myanmar. On the map it appears as a modest grid of streets gathered around a road junction. Its position explains its role: this is a waypoint for travel between the Bagan area to the west and the volcanic landmark of Mount Popa a short distance away.
Around the town, the terrain begins to rise towards Popa. That extinct volcano, and the monastery on the rocky outcrop at its foot, are among the country's best-known pilgrimage sites. In the town itself the streets are simple and practical, with market blocks near the junction and residential lanes spreading outward into a landscape of fields and scrub.
A Kyaukpadaung map poster shows a place that many travellers pass through and some call home. In black and white, the meeting of roads becomes the main feature: a few confident lines crossing open country, with the settlement clustered where they come together.
Main routes meet in the town. They give the map a clear centre and explain why Kyaukpadaung grew as a stopping point in central Myanmar.
Roads lead out towards the slopes of Mount Popa, the extinct volcano and pilgrimage site that rises above the surrounding dry plain.
Outside the compact town, the map opens into sparse rural land typical of Myanmar's central dry zone, which gives the streets plenty of breathing room.
