Te mapa
Pakokku stands on the western bank of the Irrawaddy, a short distance upstream from the plains of Bagan and not far from where the Chindwin joins the main river. From above, the most striking feature is the water itself: a broad channel with shifting sandbars and islands, changing width with the seasons. The town spreads back from the bank along a loose grid of streets that thins out into farmland.
Pakokku has long been a regional trading town for the dry zone of central Myanmar, known for goods such as tobacco and thanaka. The Pakokku Bridge, opened in 2011, crosses the Irrawaddy here and ranks among the longest bridges in the country. Monasteries and religious buildings are spread through the town, as in many river towns in this part of Myanmar.
A Pakokku map poster places the river at the heart of the frame. The bridge's long straight line crosses the water, the town's streets sit to one side, and the braided channels and sandbanks fill the rest. Rendered in simple black line work, it becomes a study of a town shaped by a great river.
The wide river, with its islands and seasonal sandbars, takes up a large part of the map and gives the composition a strong, flowing shape that changes character with each style.
A long, straight crossing spans the Irrawaddy and its sandbanks, drawing a clear line across the water and connecting the town with the eastern bank.
Streets run back from the bank in a modest grid before giving way to fields, so the built-up area appears as a compact block beside the open water.
