Te mapa
Kyaukpyu sits at the northern end of Ramree Island on the Rakhine coast of Myanmar. On a map the town is small and low-lying, a modest grid of streets on a point of land, but its setting is dramatic. Channels, mangrove-fringed inlets and islands break up the coastline, and the sea wraps around several sides.
The waters off the town form a natural deep-water harbour, which is why Kyaukpyu has become the focus of major infrastructure plans. It is the starting point of oil and gas pipelines that cross Myanmar to China, with a terminal on nearby Made Island, and a special economic zone and port have been proposed here.
Away from the harbour, the landscape is a mix of paddy fields, low hills and tidal creeks that reach far inland, with a handful of roads linking the town to villages further along the island. A Kyaukpyu map poster shows a place defined by its shoreline, where the outline of land and water is the strongest element of the design.
Deep channels between islands and headlands form a natural anchorage, bringing wide areas of open water right up to the edge of the town.
The irregular shore of Ramree Island, with its inlets, creeks and mangrove edges, draws a detailed, organic outline around the street grid.
The town itself is a small, orderly layout of streets on low ground, a neat core surrounded by water and farmland.

Koteā ko Kyaukpyu
Kyaukpyu matters to people from the Rakhine coast and to those who have worked on the island's harbour and energy projects. Its shape, a small town where sea and islands meet, makes a quietly striking poster.
