La Garde belongs to the Toulon metropolitan area, just east of the city, where the coastal plain opens out between low hills and the Mediterranean. From above it is a mix of residential districts, commercial zones and road corridors, closely joined to its neighbours, so that on the map the town edge is defined more by roads than by open land.
At its heart stands a rocky outcrop with the old village clustered on and around it, a pattern the name itself hints at, since a garde was a place of watch.
