Te mapa
La Unión lies in the Region of Murcia, just inland from Cartagena, at the foot of the hills known as the Sierra Minera. For centuries these hills were mined for lead, silver and zinc, and the nineteenth-century boom shaped the town that stands today. On the map, a relatively regular pattern of streets sits on the flatter ground, with the rough, broken terrain of the mining district rising beyond it.
The town is known across Spain for the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas, a major flamenco festival devoted to the mining songs of the area. It is held in the old public market, an iron and glass building from the town's prosperous years that now serves as a cultural landmark.
A La Unión map poster tells a story of work and music. The orderly streets of the town contrast with the irregular lines of the hills where miners once laboured, and the balance between the two gives the poster its character.
The Sierra Minera rises close to the town, and its tracks and old workings create a rugged, irregular texture on the map alongside the built-up area.
Much of La Unión is laid out in a fairly regular grid of streets, a reminder of the rapid growth that came with the mining boom.
The historic public market, home of the Cante de las Minas festival, anchors the centre of town, where the main streets meet and public life gathers.
