Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, and its outline tells two stories. The northern part is long and narrow, squeezed between steep mountains, with Riva del Garda at its tip. Further south the shores pull apart and the water spreads into a wide, rounded basin on the plain.
Roads follow this shape closely. On the western side the lakeside road passes through a chain of tunnels cut into the cliffs, while the eastern shore runs beneath the long ridge of Monte Baldo. Towns sit wherever the slopes leave room, their old streets tightly packed against the water.
