Lanciano lies in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo, a few kilometres inland from the Adriatic coast. The historic centre is built across several hills separated by ravines. From above, the old quarters appear as dense clusters of narrow streets on the high ground, with lines of greenery following the valleys between them.
The cathedral, the Madonna del Ponte, stands on the remains of an ancient bridge that once spanned one of these ravines, a clear example of how the terrain shaped the town. Lanciano is also widely known for the Eucharistic Miracle, a relic kept in the Church of San Francesco that draws pilgrims.
