Lanxi is a county town in Heilongjiang, in northeastern China, on the wide and fertile Songnen Plain north of Harbin. The Hulan River flows past the town on its way south toward the Songhua. The surrounding land is flat and open, divided into large farm fields that reach almost to the edge of the streets.
The town's layout is typical of county seats in northeastern China. It has a grid of wide roads and long blocks, with a main commercial axis and residential districts arranged around it. Winters are long and cold. The region is known for its harvests of grain and soybeans, grown in the dark black soil of the plain.
