Te mapa
The Latin Quarter lies on the Left Bank of the Seine, mostly in the 5th arrondissement, facing Notre-Dame and the Île de la Cité. On the map, the ground rises gently from the river to the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, crowned by the Panthéon. The older streets follow the slope and curve around it, while two wide nineteenth-century boulevards, Saint-Michel and Saint-Germain, cut straight through.
The district has been Paris's academic centre since the Middle Ages. The Sorbonne was founded here in the thirteenth century, and the name Latin Quarter comes from the language that students and scholars spoke on its streets. Schools, bookshops and libraries still fill many of its blocks.
To the south-east, Rue Mouffetard descends as a narrow market street, and the Jardin des Plantes opens along the river. To the west lie the Luxembourg Gardens. A Latin Quarter map poster shows a district where medieval lanes, a hilltop monument and Haussmann's boulevards overlap, with the Seine framing the northern edge.
The Montagne Sainte-Geneviève rises gently from the river. The Panthéon stands at its top, with streets radiating around the domed building.
Boulevard Saint-Michel and Boulevard Saint-Germain cross near the Cluny area. They form straight lines through the district's older, more irregular pattern.
A narrow street winding south from the hill, following an ancient Roman road. It is one of the district's most distinctive lines on the map.
