Le Marais spreads across the 3rd and 4th arrondissements on the Right Bank of Paris. Its name means the marsh, after the wetland that once covered the area. From the seventeenth century, aristocrats built grand town houses here, the hôtels particuliers, and many still stand around courtyards behind their street facades. On a map, their plots create a dense, irregular pattern.
Much of Le Marais escaped the wide boulevards of the Haussmann era, and its narrow, winding streets keep an older plan. Rue de Rivoli runs along its southern side, the Centre Pompidou stands near its western edge and the Place de la Bastille lies to the east. Between them, the streets curve and meet at odd angles.
The Place des Vosges lies at the heart of the district. It was inaugurated in 1612 and is often described as the oldest planned square in Paris. The Musée Picasso occupies the Hôtel Salé, and Rue des Rosiers runs through the historic Jewish quarter. A Le Marais map poster captures this finely grained district, where the geometry of the square stands against the tangle of lanes around it.
The perfectly square plaza, framed by uniform arcaded buildings, stands out clearly among the irregular streets around it as the district's most geometric shape.
The courtyards of the old town houses appear as open spaces inside the blocks, giving the map its typical pattern of solid facades and hidden interiors.
This narrow street runs through the old Jewish quarter and is one of the lines that show how much of the old street pattern has survived.
