Lemgo is an old Hanseatic town in the Lippe region of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the hill country between the Teutoburg Forest and the Weser. From above, the historic centre forms a compact oval. Its long main street runs through the middle, and a ring road follows the line of the former fortifications. The small Bega river runs along the edge, and newer districts spread across the gentle hills around it.
The town is known for its Weser Renaissance architecture: richly decorated gabled houses and public buildings from the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The best known is the Hexenbürgermeisterhaus, linked to the town's dark period of witch trials. Brake Castle, on the Bega just outside the centre, houses a museum devoted to the Weser Renaissance.

The small river curves around the town's edge and passes Brake Castle, softening the tight geometry of the medieval centre.
