Lemoore sits in Kings County, in the flat heart of California's San Joaquin Valley. From above it is a study in straight lines. The town grid is aligned with the square-mile section roads that divide the surrounding farmland, so streets, fields and canals all run north–south or east–west. Only a few diagonal rail and highway alignments interrupt the pattern.
The town is named after Dr. Lovern Lee Moore, who helped found it in the late nineteenth century as an agricultural centre. Farming still frames it on every side. West of the city lies Naval Air Station Lemoore, a major Navy jet base whose long runways and structured layout are clearly visible on any map of the area.
