Lenger is in Turkistan Region in southern Kazakhstan, southeast of Shymkent, at the foot of the Western Tian Shan. It grew as a coal mining town in the Soviet period. Today it is a residential and agricultural centre, and the mountains to the south, which include the Ugam range, are its most notable natural setting.
On a map, Lenger is fairly regular. Straight streets form long blocks, typical of towns planned in the Soviet era, and main roads lead north toward Shymkent. On the southern side the land rises, streams come down from the mountains, and the pattern loosens into farmland and valleys. The transition from plain to foothill shows clearly on the page.
