León began as the camp of the Roman Legio VII Gemina, and the city's name comes from the word legio. From above, you can still make out the rough rectangle of the Roman and medieval walls in the old town. Inside it, narrow streets and small squares gather around the Gothic cathedral and the Basilica of San Isidoro.
The Bernesga River runs along the western side of the center, lined with gardens and promenades, and the Torío flows to the east. Beyond the old walls, the 19th and 20th-century expansion added broader avenues and regular blocks. The Camino de Santiago crosses the city on its way west towards Galicia.
A León map poster shows the old walled core, the river on one side and the planned districts spreading outward. The city was capital of the medieval Kingdom of León, and its cathedral is known for having one of the largest collections of medieval stained glass in Europe.
The outline of the Roman and medieval walls still defines a compact historic core of narrow streets, squares and the cathedral precinct.
The river runs past the western side of the center, its banks lined with parks and crossed by several bridges, including the route out towards San Marcos.
Beyond the walls, the planned expansion adds wider avenues and regular blocks, which clearly contrast with the tangled medieval lanes.

Koteā ko León
León appeals to people who studied, married or grew up there, and to pilgrims who passed through on the Camino. A poster brings together the walls, the river and the cathedral quarter in one clear drawing that reads well from across a room.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example with a Camino date or a family name. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Instant HD files come in six sizes, or order a printed poster shipped from partners in 30+ countries.
