Te mapa
Lesnoy, in Sverdlovsk Oblast, was founded after the Second World War as a closed nuclear town and was long known only by the code name Sverdlovsk-45. Its purpose was industrial and secret, and access is still restricted today. That origin explains the map: the town was laid out on paper in one campaign rather than grown over centuries, and few Russian towns of its size have such a clear plan.
The street plan is regular and deliberate, with broad avenues, rectangular residential blocks and green spaces between them in the Soviet manner. The Tura River runs close by. On every side the grid meets dense forest, which gave the town its name, since lesnoy means forested in Russian. In monochrome the contrast between ruled lines and unbroken woodland is striking.
A Lesnoy map poster appeals to people who lived or worked here, often for whole careers, and to anyone interested in the planned towns of the Soviet era. On paper the town looks almost like a diagram, which suits the Blueprint style especially well, though the classic black and white version shows the forest edge just as clearly.
Straight avenues and evenly sized blocks reveal a town designed in a single effort. Housing, services and green courtyards follow a clear hierarchy.
The river runs alongside the town. It adds the only natural curve to an otherwise ruled plan and gives the composition a strong, flowing edge.
Forest wraps around the built area on all sides, so the street network appears as a sharp-edged island in a broad field of woodland.

Koteā ko Lesnoy
Former residents can find a closed town hard to revisit, which makes a map of it more personal than most souvenirs. With Lesnoy on the wall, the home streets, the school route and the riverbank stay close wherever life has led.
