Te mapa
Linares lies in the province of Jaén, in northern Andalusia, on high ground between the Guadalquivir valley and the foothills of the Sierra Morena. From above, the city is a compact, roughly rounded mass of streets. A denser historic core sits in the middle, with newer districts around it. All of it is set within the endless olive groves that dominate this part of Spain.
For centuries Linares was defined by lead mining, and the old shafts, spoil heaps and industrial buildings still mark the land around it. The guitarist Andrés Segovia was born here, and the bullfighter Manolete was fatally gored in its bullring in 1947. Just outside the city lie the ruins of Cástulo, an important Iberian and Roman settlement.
A Linares map poster shows the city as a dense island in a sea of farmland. The tight streets of the old centre, the broader avenues of later expansion and the rail lines on the outskirts make a clear, legible plan. The countryside around it gives a pale, even margin. It suits anyone with roots in Jaén or an interest in Spain's industrial past.
Narrow, irregular streets around the old squares and churches form the densest part of the map, the core from which the modern city grew.
Around the city, traces of old mine workings, tracks and industrial sites add scattered detail to the open land, recalling the long history of lead mining in Linares.
Past the last streets, the regular pattern of Jaén's olive groves gives the composition a calm, textured border on every side.
