Lorca lies at the point where the hills of inland Murcia meet the wide, farmed valley of the Guadalentín. A long fortified hilltop dominates the map, with the Fortaleza del Sol castle along its ridge. Below it, the old town steps down the slope in narrow, winding streets, and the newer districts spread across the flat land toward the riverbed.
The town is known for its Baroque churches and palaces and for its Holy Week, when rival brotherhoods, most famously the Blue and the White, stage elaborate processions. In 2011 an earthquake damaged much of the historic centre, and years of restoration work followed.
