Lucena lies in the south of the province of Córdoba, in Andalusia, among low hills covered in olive groves. From above, the old centre forms an irregular pattern of narrow streets and small squares, packed closely together. Newer neighbourhoods and industrial areas spread outward in a more open layout.
In the Middle Ages, Lucena was an important Jewish town, sometimes called the "Pearl of Sepharad", and a significant centre of learning in al-Andalus. Near the centre stands the Castillo del Moral, where, according to tradition, Boabdil, the last Nasrid king of Granada, was held captive after being captured in 1483.
