Te mapa
Lunsar is in Port Loko District in Sierra Leone's Northern Province, inland from Freetown. On a map it is a loose town with main roads meeting at its centre. Neighbourhoods have grown along them without a formal grid, and farmland, bush and scattered villages surround the town.
Lunsar is closely linked with the nearby Marampa iron ore mines, which have been worked since the colonial period. Mining has shaped the town's growth and the roads that run through the district. Lunsar is also known for its mission institutions, including a long-established eye hospital that serves patients from across the region.
A Lunsar map poster shows a town that grew organically, following roads, streams and slopes. The centre is dense and busy, and the edges spread out in winding lanes. It is an honest portrait of a working West African town, and it means most to people who have lived, studied or worked here.
Main roads meet in the middle of town, where the blocks are densest. From here, routes lead toward Port Loko, Makeni and the mining area.
Away from the centre, streets and paths curve with the land, forming an irregular, branching pattern that gives the map a hand-drawn quality.
The Marampa iron ore area lies near the town. Tracks and roads in the surrounding country reflect the long history of mining in the district.
