Te mapa
Lys’va grew up in the Perm Krai foothills of the Urals as a metalworking settlement, and it follows the pattern of many Ural factory towns. The river was dammed, the works went up beside it, and houses spread out from there. On a map the water is still the organising line. The town's older streets lie close to the river, and newer districts extend further up the slopes.
The town's steel plant made it known across the region. It is widely remembered as a producer of steel helmets for the Soviet army during the Second World War. Industrial land still takes up a large block of the plan, and that shows up clearly on the map as broad open parcels between the residential streets.
A Lys’va map poster shows how a working town arranges itself. You see the curve of the river and the pond, the large industrial footprint, and blocks of housing in regular rows, with forest crowding the edges. Printed in plain black lines, it looks more like an engineering drawing than a postcard.
The Lysva River and its dammed stretch run through the middle of town. They form the open space that the whole street plan is organised around.
The metallurgical plant covers a large area near the water. On the print it appears as a broad block of sparse lines, set against denser housing.
Beyond the last streets, the Ural taiga takes over, and the map fades into open space on nearly every side of the town.
