Te mapa
Macquarie Island lies in the Southern Ocean roughly halfway between Tasmania and Antarctica. From above it is a long, narrow strip about thirty-four kilometres long, mostly an uplifted plateau with lakes and steep slopes falling to the sea. There are no towns or roads, only a few walking tracks and field huts.
At the northern end, a low, narrow isthmus joins the main island to a rocky headland. The Australian Antarctic research station sits here, the only permanent settlement on the island. Otherwise the coast is an unbroken series of beaches and rocky shelves, used by large colonies of seals and penguins, including almost all of the world's royal penguins.
Macquarie is a UNESCO World Heritage site because it is made of rocks from deep in the oceanic crust and upper mantle, pushed above sea level. It is the only place on Earth where this is known to happen in this way. A Macquarie Island map poster shows that thin, windswept shape alone in the ocean.

A high, lake-studded plateau takes up most of the island. It gives a long, even spine between steep coastal slopes.
Narrow beaches and rock platforms run almost the full length of both sides. There are no harbours, just the edge of the ocean.

For people who have wintered at the station, worked in conservation or simply follow remote places, this long, bare outline carries real weight. It works especially well in a tall frame or next to other polar maps.
