Madanapalle lies on a raised plateau in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, high enough to have a milder climate than the plains around it. On a map the town appears as a tight core of irregular lanes and bazaar streets. It loosens outward into newer neighbourhoods and then into farmland dotted with rocky hills and irrigation tanks.
The town is widely known for its tomato market, one of the largest in the country, and the roads fanning out from the centre carry produce in every direction. That radial pattern is easy to read from above, with main routes leaving the core like spokes towards Tirupati, Bengaluru and the surrounding villages.
Madanapalle also has a place in cultural history. Rabindranath Tagore translated Jana Gana Mana into English at the Besant Theosophical College here in 1919, and the philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti was born in the town.
