Mahabalipuram, also called Mamallapuram, lies on the Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu, south of Chennai. The town occupies a narrow strip of land. The Bay of Bengal is on one side, and the Buckingham Canal and backwaters are on the other. From above, a straight sandy shore runs along the east, a low granite outcrop rises in the middle of town, and a small grid of streets fills the space in between.
The Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, built mainly under the Pallava kings in the 7th and 8th centuries, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It includes the Shore Temple at the water's edge, the five monolithic Pancha Rathas and the great open-air relief known as Arjuna's Penance. Many of these are cut directly into the town's granite rocks, so the monuments and the landscape are the same stone.
A Mahabalipuram map poster shows a place where the coastline, the rock and the street plan fit closely together. The Shore Temple sits on the beach, the carved hill rises among the lanes, and the canal draws a straight line inland. It is a thoughtful print for travellers, students of architecture and families from the Chennai coast.
The Shore Temple stands at the edge of a long, straight beach, where the town meets the open Bay of Bengal.
A low rocky outcrop in the middle of town holds cave temples and carvings, with streets wrapping around its edges.
The canal and backwaters run parallel to the coast on the western side, drawing a straight inland line behind the town.

Koteā ko Mahabalipuram
Many people remember Mahabalipuram from a school trip, a first visit to the monuments or a weekend by the sea from Chennai. A map of the town between canal and shore keeps that memory specific.
Add your own title and a subtitle such as a date or the name of a trip, and keep the coordinates line. Sand and Paper suit the granite and beach, and Blueprint or Noir let the coastline and canal stand out clearly.
