Te mapa
Mamou is the capital of the Mamou Region in central Guinea, at the southern edge of the Fouta Djallon highlands. It has long been a crossroads: routes from Conakry on the coast pass through here before dividing toward the highlands and the interior. From above the town gathers around these main roads, set among hills and valleys.
In the colonial period Mamou was a stop on the railway from Conakry toward the Niger, and the town's layout still reflects its role as a transit point. The highlands around it are the source country for several major West African rivers, and the landscape of plateaus, slopes and streams makes the ground uneven.
A Mamou map poster shows a town organised by its crossroads. The main routes enter the frame from different directions and meet in the centre, while neighbourhoods fill the land between them and give way to hills. It is a clear, legible composition, and for anyone who has travelled through central Guinea, a familiar one.
Main routes from the coast and the highlands meet in the centre, forming the core that the rest of the town is built around.
The old railway line that once linked Conakry with the interior passes through the town, a long line still visible in its layout.
Beyond the streets, the ground rises toward the Fouta Djallon, leaving open, uneven land where tracks follow valleys and slopes.
