This Māndvi is a town in the Surat district of southern Gujarat, set on the banks of the Tapi river, upstream from Surat. It is not the better-known port town of the same name in Kutch. It serves as the centre of its taluka, a local market and administrative hub for the farming villages around it, where sugarcane and other crops are grown on the fertile plain.
On a map, the river is the defining feature. The Tapi runs past in a broad curve, and the older part of the town gathers along its bank, with narrow, irregular lanes.
