Te mapa
Mangalia lies on the Black Sea coast in Constanța County, close to the Bulgarian border, and is the southernmost city on the Romanian coast. On the map the town sits where Lake Mangalia opens toward the sea. The harbour and shipyard take up the waterfront, and residential districts spread across the flat ground inland.
People have lived on this site for thousands of years. The ancient Greek colony of Callatis stood here, and remains of its walls and buildings can still be seen in the town. Mangalia is also home to the Esmahan Sultan Mosque, built in the sixteenth century and considered the oldest mosque in Romania, a reminder of the long Ottoman period on this coast.
A Mangalia map poster frames the town between two bodies of water. Just north along the shore lie the resorts of Saturn, Venus, Cap Aurora, Jupiter, Neptun and Olimp. These planned holiday towns were built mostly in the 1960s and 1970s and appear as orderly patterns of hotels, promenades and small lakes along the beach.
The long, narrow lake reaches inland from the harbour. It adds a distinctive band of water that divides parts of the town and frames the port area.
Traces of the ancient Greek city survive near the centre, a reminder that the street plan sits on a site settled more than two and a half thousand years ago.
A string of planned resorts runs north along the coast. Each is a compact layout of hotels, gardens and lakeside paths, and together they form a continuous line beside the beach.

Mangalia holds summer memories for generations of Romanian families. It is also home to long-established residents, including its Tatar and Turkish communities. A map of the town and its coast is a calm, lasting way to keep that shoreline close.
