Maturín lies on the flat savannahs of eastern Venezuela, and the land shows on the map as open space with almost no relief to bend the streets. The city spreads outward in a broad, low pattern, with a central grid giving way to wider avenues and newer districts as it reaches toward the surrounding plains.
The Guarapiche River curves along the city's edge, its meanders drawing a soft line against the regular blocks. Main roads leave the centre in several directions, linking Maturín with the rest of Monagas and with the oil fields that have shaped the region's economy over the past century.
