Te mapa
Mauá is part of the ABC region on the southeastern edge of Greater São Paulo, and its map is shaped by uneven terrain. Instead of a single regular grid, neighbourhoods follow ridges and valleys, so the streets turn and branch constantly. The old railway between Santos and Jundiaí runs through the city, and the historic centre grew up around its station.
Industrial areas occupy large plots along the rail line and major roads, including the Capuava refinery near the border with Santo André, whose tanks and pipework form an unusually geometric patch on the map. A Mauá map poster shows these large industrial shapes beside the dense, irregular neighbourhoods that cover the surrounding hills.
The city is named after Irineu Evangelista de Sousa, the Viscount of Mauá, a nineteenth-century industrialist who promoted Brazil's early railways. Mauá became a separate municipality in the mid-twentieth century and grew quickly as a manufacturing centre within the São Paulo metropolitan area, with petrochemicals among its best-known industries.
The rail line crosses the city through the older centre, giving the map a long, gently curving line around which the first streets were laid out.
Tanks, process units and internal roads form a distinct industrial block near the Santo André border, a precise geometric shape amid residential streets.
Across the rest of the city, streets bend along the slopes, creating a dense and irregular pattern that changes from one valley to the next.
