Mauganj is a town in the northeast of Madhya Pradesh, not far from the border with Uttar Pradesh. For a long time it was part of Rewa district. In 2023 it became the headquarters of a new district of its own, which gave the town a larger administrative role. The surrounding country is agricultural, on the uplands of the Vindhyan region.
On a map Mauganj has the typical form of a North Indian market town. The centre is dense, with narrow, irregular lanes around the bazaar and along the main road.
